49 Seductions and Repulsions

2007 5" x 5" (each) Acrylic on paper.

In 49 Seductions and Repulsions, Medina investigates female self perception. While searching for faces to paint online, Medina discovered that many photographs of women, whether professional or amateur captured a strange mix of seductive poses that distorted the women's faces, sometimes to the point of repulsion. Common poses she found were women opening mouths, licking their lips, and half smiling, half grimacing. Taking this cue, Medina further distorts the portraits at different levels to make a statement about the roles and self perception of women on the web and for the camera.
