ELLA: Exhibiting Local Latina Artists, Latino Cultural Center, Dallas, TX, April 25-June 28, 2014
I am honored to be the curator of the 2014 ELLA exhibition at the Latino Cultural Center. The artists selected for this exhibit are but a small group of the vast array of local Latina artists living and working in the DFW area. The variety of media, subject matter and themes in this exhibit speaks to the diversity within the Latina artist community. The art is playful, seductive, quietly sophisticated, bold, urgent, and intense. Although the work is diverse the viewer can find threads of connectivity. Works were selected from each artist with the other artists in mind and the viewer can find visual as well as contextual associations. The natural world reoccurs often, and with that issues of fruitfulness or lack thereof emerge. Empathy and a strong desire to share one’s experience with others seem to ebb and flow through the exhibit. An admirable unexpectedness also occurs from the subject matter to the media to the display of the work itself. The art in ELLA is indicative of how significant women’s views are within our community and how imperative it is to continue to support and exhibit Latina artists in all venues.
